FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do Zebra Shades work?
Zebra shades are an innovative and unique type of window covering that provides a modern approach to light control and privacy. These shades feature alternating bands of sheer and opaque fabric that can be easily adjusted to control the amount of light entering the room.
What is the difference between dim-out and light filtering zebra shades?
Zebra shades come in two different options: dim-out and light filtering. Dim-out shades feature a thicker fabric that blocks out more light, offering greater privacy and light control. Light filtering shades, on the other hand, are made with a thinner fabric that lets more light in and provides a softer, diffused light effect. When choosing between the two, consider your specific needs and preferences for light control.
Are Zebra Shades in Style?
The answer to whether zebra shades are in style for your home is subjective and depends on who you ask. Interior designers may advise against them due to their distinctive design, while guests may appreciate their modern and stylish look. Another factor to consider is the space you wish to cover. Zebra shades can attract attention and may look busy, especially in rooms with many windows to cover. In such cases, it may be better to opt for a different type of shade to achieve a softer look.
What are Zebra Shades?
Zebra blinds, also known as zebra shades, were invented in the mid-’80s in South Korea but are relatively new to North America. These window treatments are made with a dual-layered fabric that features alternating sheer mesh and light filtering or room darkening strips of material.
Zebra blinds are available in both light-filtering and dim-out (room darkening) versions, making them versatile for different needs and preferences. The light-filtering version allows for softer, diffused light, while the dim-out version offers enhanced privacy and light control.
Overall, zebra blinds offer a stylish and functional option for window treatments. With their dual-layered fabric design and modern style, they can add a touch of elegance to any room while providing privacy and light control.
What are Zebra Shades called?
Zebra shades are known by a variety of names, including illusion shades, mirage shades, transitional shades, dual shades, and banded shades. They are also referred to as double roller shades, day and night shades, dual-layered shades, and sheer shades. However, zebra shades and zebra blinds are the most commonly used names to describe these window treatments.
Are zebra shades expensive?
Are zebra shades popular?
Yes, zebra shades are very popular for the home or living spaces, but not for commercial spaces. In fact, zebra shades are probably the most ordered window shades currently. Although, they may not be suitable for all homeowners. Some people hate it, while others absolutely love it.
Which zebra shades are the best?
With so many manufacturers, it’s hard to know for sure. Regardless, the material and manufacturer definitely play a huge role. Making use of a new fabric that just came out can lead to problems, but it’s pretty rare.
New materials are great, but it takes time till we find out if fabric is problematic with fraying or other issues. Hence, it’s always best to stay with the more commonly used materials which have been around for a while. We love using Neolux zebra fabrics and with a 5-year warranty on materials.
Can zebra shades be blackout?
Zebra shades don’t provide the level of darkness a blackout fabric would provide. Therefore, these shades are referred to as dim out or room darkening shades and no blackouts.
Do zebra blinds block out light?
With dim out or room darkening zebra shades, the material will block out light. Conversely, with a light filtering version, natural light will still enter your living space. With light filtering, the brighter the material, the more it will glow and will let light through the blinds.
Can zebra shades be cordless?
What do zebra blinds look like?
From the inside of the house and outside, you won’t be able to miss this type of window treatment. Zebra blinds are very pretty on the outside when set on the stripe. However, they look like regular shade when fully closed.
What are zebra blinds made of?
Zebra blinds are made of aluminum, plastic, and dual Zebra fabrics. The back fabric doesn’t move up and down. Only the fabric on the front is able to move. In order to hide the roll, all zebra shades come with a 3” or 4” cassette already included. This may include:
- Rounded aluminum cassette with a fabric insert in 5 colors, or
- Square aluminum cassette made with five colors – white, bronze, silver, ivory, and black.
Furthermore, there’s a bottom rail with the same color as the cassette. The fabric travels through the aluminum bottom rail, and it’s basically acts as the weight to keep the shade straight. Also, a manual clutch or a motor can be on either side – left or right.
Are zebra blinds energy efficient?
Yes, just like any other shade, zebra blinds are energy-efficient. Nonetheless, it is important to remember not to use dark fabrics if you’re trying to minimize the heat. If you’re facing south or west, choose only bright-colored fabrics.
Are zebra shades good for showers?
We have special zebra fabrics that are suitable for water and humidity. These shades are made of 30% PES (Polyethersulfone) and 70% PVC. Thus, allowing you to easily clean or wipe off this material if required.
How wide can zebra blinds be?
Most of the zebra shades fabrics are 110″ wide. The widest possible you can make the shades in one piece is 111″ wide. Though, it’s possible to do one valence (cassette) and to put 2 or 3 shades inside the single cassette. This is what we usually do if the window is wider than 111″ and zebra shades are needed.
How to clean zebra blinds?
To clean your zebra blinds, it is best to read instructions from the manufacturer on the fabric you chose. However, if you are not sure of the type of fabric, try to avoid using any water directly on the fabric, if that doesn’t work, then you can try cleaning with the following:
- A magic eraser or the white eraser of a pencil.
- A cup of water with a splash of hand soap
Using a new toothbrush, gently clean the fabric. Don’t ever use chemicals.
How to fix zebra blinds?
The most common issue I see with manual versions of zebra shades is that, unlike regular shades, they use a slow-moving clutch. Hence, there are no breaks on the chain to stop it from going further down beyond the point it was designed to reach. People with no experience with these shades may not notice that the shade has reached the floor. If you continue to lower the shade, you will create a situation where there is a major gap between the front and back fabrics. They may no longer touch each other.
To fix this problem, visually lower the shade till it starts going upwards. If you notice another issue, it may be due to an error during installation or because the blinds are not leveled. Give us a call, and we will try and help.
